Important housekeeping items...
Communication
As a parent of two children who attended public school, I understand the importance of good communication between home and school. The children and I will be regularly updating you through daily agenda messages and weekly newsletters. I am almost always available after school for a quick check-in or a pre-arranged meeting. I am also available by phone or text (250-510-9718) in the evenings should an issue or concern arise. My district email is [email protected] and my other email is listed above. For the past few years I have been using a cell phone app called Class Messanger that will allow me to send photos, information and reminders to you via text message or email. Please consider sharing your cell phone information with me so that I may send you updates, or download the app and connect to our class using the following code: KMNYKH. I am in the process of investigating other programs that may also allow me to build a portfolio of your child's learning. I will keep you up to date as I determine the best (and safest) technology for communicating student learning.
Classroom Helpers
I welcome and appreciate parent helpers in my classroom. We do need a few weeks to get to know each other and learn routines though so I will begin inviting parent helpers in by the end of October. Some jobs, such as making playdough or cutting and labeling could be done at home if you want to help but are unable to come in to the classroom.
Supplies
We will be using communal supplies this year. I tend to order only what we’ll need in the classroom and use better quality supplies as they last longer. (ie: I already have a class set of scissors so I will not be ordering scissors this year. Crayons and pencil crayons break or get dull so I will be using Crayola Twist-ables.) If you have purchased your own supplies already please do send them in – I will likely trade them with the office for the type of items I want. If you have not already purchased your own supplies I urge you to please consider purchasing from the school, or checking with me about what is actually needed.
Students are also asked to please bring in one box of Kleenex and a pair of running shoes to be used inside the school and in the gym. Sandals, dressy shoes and crocs are not ideal for running in the gym. If your child cannot tie their own shoes please please please buy velcro or slip-on shoes!
Scholastic Book Clubs
We will be participating in the primary book clubs from Scholastic Books. Approximately once a month leaflets will be sent home. You are under no obligation to purchase these books. Those wishing to purchase books should please return their order form and money and the class orders will be compiled and sent together. Credits earned by the class through book orders will be used to supplement the classroom library.
Snacks and Lunches
Good nutrition is important for growing brains. Please be sure to pack your child enough healthy fuel for their day at school. Sugary snacks and treats should not be sent for consumption at school. If sugar is in the top three ingredients then it probably doesn’t have the staying power necessary for a hard-working brain. Candy, chips, pop and chocolate bars are not appropriate for school and will be sent home.
PLEASE LABEL LUNCH KITS AND CONTAINERS WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME!!!
A few quick notes:
- The water fountain is far from our classroom. The children are invited to bring a refillable water bottle (labeled with their name) to keep handy in the classroom.
- Please leave toys at home – I prefer to not deal with toy envy, loss or breakage.
As a dropdown under the Housekeeping tab I have a wishlist of items I'm looking for to add to our classroom. Please let me know if you can help me with any of these!
