Weekly News February 8th
Monday was a fun start to the week with the dusting of snow! We did a quick calendar and then headed right out for a walk to the woods. It looked very different with all the white stuff! We were cold when we got back to school and warmed up with snack and some math play. Some people played a rhyming domino game with me that was lots of fun!
Tuesday first thing Mrs. Wood came and did some drama activities in our room for the Fine Arts time. Her space is being used on Tuesdays for the Parent-Child Mother Goose so for the time being she does the Fine Arts in our classroom on Tuesday mornings. After Fine Arts we explored with some new materials in a Tinker Tray. The trays are part of an inquiry project Ms. Mousseau and I participated in last year. This first time was just a chance to explore and get familiar with the materials but the next time I bring them out the students will be given a job to do with the materials. After snack Melvin visited and we finished up our energy gauges and did a picture of something that makes us feel happy. Just before lunch we had two special guests come to read with us - members of the Cowichan Capitals Hockey team were in the school and they really enjoyed coming to our class. In library in the afternoon Miss Julie read us another book about Chinese New Year.
Wednesday was wonderful! I know that we do a lot of play in our classroom already but it was very interesting to sit back and observe a whole day of unstructured play. We began the day by inviting Ms. Switzer, Mrs. Eakins and their classes to join us. Having the extra teachers meant that we were able to have outside play as an option for most of the morning! We had a lovely lovely day of deep play. There was no feeling of being rushed and remarkably, there were no fights! All of the teachers commented about having witnessed a variety of resourceful, creative and imaginative play. Some wonderful toys were brought from home and generously shared with others.
Thursday we were well bundled up and went for a walk right away. We found some very interesting ice crystals and there was lots of speculation about how they were formed. Some people were a little under dressed so we didn't last as long as usual and headed back early for calendar and snack. One student brought back a large piece of ice which we examined and made some observations and predictions using our science mind. During work time we did some math cut and paste activities.
Friday was super snowy! We started the day with Fine Arts and then did calendar and some scientific observations about the ice (water) from our walk yesterday. After snack we had some math choices and then it was time to get suited up for outside. After lunch, everyone who was here was super-focused on getting their last few minutes of focused reading at school for the read-a-thon. We are really hopeful that all of our reading is enough to make Mrs. Calverley have to wear the mask and snorkel and flippers for a week! Please remember to record all the home reading minutes up to and including bedtime today (Friday February 8th). Pledge forms and money raised can be sent to school next week please!
We sent home a list of all students in the three K classes so that anyone who plans on working on Valentines this weekend has the names and correct spellings of everyone. Please do not feel pressure to do anything at all - we just wanted to make sure everyone has everything they need.
Lego club is the first and 3rd Thursday's of the month in the basement of the Crofton Community Centre on Musgrave Street from 3:30-4:30. Please mark your calendars! Parents will be required to be in attendance - this is not a drop-off program.
We will continue to walk in all weather - please make sure your child has appropriate footwear and clothing.
