Weekly News October 26th
Monday was our Drop Everything And Read event! So many parents, grandparents, neighbours, friends, and other educational supports came to help! Thanks so much for all that you do to support your child! It was awesome to see so many people all reading for 20 minutes - and enjoying the muffins made by Riley and friends! We had a few new tools and toys in our room that I picked up at Pro-D on Friday. I bought a beautiful wooden ferry boat (like the one we can see from the window) and a sailboat and a shapes stacker. They were all handcrafted by an artisan on Saltspring Island! The students really enjoyed the new items and they also really enjoyed the Halloween sensory bin in the hallway. Unfortunately there was a lot of pieces left on the floor so it had to be closed.
Tuesday morning Ms. Wood had everything set up for the finishing touches to be put on our fish during Fine Arts. They are now on display in the library so please feel free to pop in and have a look! Just before lunch we had our first lacrosse lesson in the gym. Miss Naomi was a really great instructor and almost everyone was able to get their ball into the net on their stick and some people could even cradle the ball! After lunch and BFF's we went to change our library books. Miss Julie read us a book about a horse named Spirit.
Wednesday we only had 9 students - perhaps because of the 2 hour early dismissal. I know it can be challenging to arrange pick up just after lunch so I understand the low attendance, but these days are beneficial too because nothing else gets booked into the morning. We were able to get out for a walk and enjoy the fresh air. We practiced moving our bodies in different ways - you may have seen us skipping, or galloping, or side-stepping down the sidewalk on York Avenue! We spent quite a while in the alley coming back and collected all kinds of specimens of leaves to examine and study. Mr. Seymour came and sang songs with us and played his drum for us. Just before lunch Mrs. Calverley came and showed us some new balls that she bought just for the kindergarten students to play with at lunchtime recess. It was an early dismissal day so students left right after eating lunch and in the afternoon the teachers did a lot of talking about learning outside.
On Thursday I had a meeting all day so Ms. MacKay and Ms. Wood were in the class. Ms. Mackay is a retired teacher who I have worked with before and she had a great time with everyone. In the afternoon Ms. Wood enjoyed getting to know the students better - which can only help during her next fine arts lesson!
Friday was our Wendy's House field trip! We were all so excited to go on a real bus ride and many students had never been to Wendy's House before. (For those of you who have preschoolers Wendy's House is open to the public Monday-Thursday. They have a Facebook page where you can check for the hours.) The highlights from our time there were definitely the tree fort, the fire truck and the tug boat - but there was lots of exciting play happening in all the play areas. As always, the big mess was cleaned up in record time and we were on our way back to the school before we knew it! It was already lunch recess when we got back to the school so we just went right outside. At lunch eating time we were joined by some big brothers and sisters and their classmates from Ms. Lesargent's room. They spent the afternoon with us. We had the choice between playing outside or in Ms. Mousseau's room for centres.
I noticed that some people have signed into the FreshGrade portfolios - and some have even commented on their child's learning. Please take a moment to try logging in if you haven't already. This is the primary mode of communication about your child's learning this year. If you are having difficulty accessing your child's portfolio please connect with me and I'll be happy to help!
Also, the kindergarten students will be using loose parts (any small items) to build a special project for our remembrance day assembly. We are asking each student to bring in some red bits and black bits (anything small that can be glued to our display - beads, feathers, tiles, bits of ___, pom pom, broken crayon, seriously - anything red or black!) to contribute to a cooperative piece of art. It would be helpful to have the items by Wednesday.
