Weekly News February 22nd
Monday was Family Day - I hope everyone found something fun to do!
Tuesday we started the day doing fine arts with Mrs. Wood. The highlight for many of the students was when she taught us to do the Limbo!!! We used some small watercolour sets to paint our valentines collection bags and once they had dried we "mailed" our cards. "Reading" and matching the names on the valentine cards is a great way for students to practice letter recognition. There were a few errors and I appreciate you sending the strays back to be redistributed! Just before lunch recess we had a lockdown drill where we practiced being super quiet in the corner of the classroom. Everyone did very very well! We invited Ms. Mousseau's class to accompany us to the library since they missed their library turn on Monday. Miss Julie read us a book about friendship troubles. Everyone had a chance to pick a new book and we made it back up to the classroom in time for centres.
First thing on Wednesday we went down to the gym to watch the Axis theatre performance. It wasn't as interactive as other performances we have had at the school in the past but the students seemed to enjoy it. They were exceptionally well behaved! After almost an hour of sitting quietly in the gym we were going a little squirrelly so we headed right outside for some running around time. We brought some tempra paint pucks and brushes outside with us and many students enjoyed painting on the snow! It was such fun that we chose to bring them outside at lunchtime too!
Thursday morning we did a quick calendar time and then headed out with Ms. Mousseau and Miss Melanie's classes for a walk to the Queen Street park. It was slippery going on the side of the road and we had to be very careful as we walked. We took our snack with us and played for a long time in the beautiful sunshine! Ms. Mousseau, Miss Melanie and I were all very impressed with the deep and active play that we saw at the park! The students are getting very good at communicating their feelings and solving their problems! In the afternoon there was some dedicated re-arrangement of the house centre that led to a very large mess so we had to have some extra time to do the clean up. At the end of every day we have been working on some dedicated time to practice our phonemic awareness skills. Any time you can spend at home playing with words (hearing beginning and ending sounds in particular) will be beneficial to your child.
Friday morning we had Fine Arts with Ms Wood. Afterwards we did calendar and then after snack we worked on our number recognition booklet. Early finishers worked on some small math choices, including building numbers using loose parts. We had a little bit of extra time after clean up in the afternoon so once we finished our word games we had a one-foot balancing challenge. Building core muscle strength is important for the whole body but all so for fine motor skills. The read-a-thon time sheets were submitted to the office today and we are really hoping that Mrs. Calverley will have to wear a mask, snorkel and flippers for a week!! We will find out for sure at the wrap up assembly on March 6th.
We are sorry that we were a bit late getting the permission forms out for next Friday's trip to Wendy's House. Please try to get them back in asap!
Lego club is the first and 3rd Thursday's of the month in the basement of the Crofton Community Centre on Musgrave Street from 3:30-4:30. Please mark your calendars! Parents will be required to be in attendance - this is not a drop-off program.
We will continue to walk in all weather - please make sure your child has appropriate footwear and clothing.
There are still a few parents who are not accessing the FreshGrade portfolios regularly (I can tell who you are!!!). The students will begin to add their voice to the posts over the next couple of months and if you need support to access them again please feel free to contact me. You are always welcome to add any comments or questions to any of the posts.
