Weekly News May 3rd
Monday morning we left right away for a walk to the beach. Ms Mousseau was away but her guest teacher came with us and both classes had a marvellous time! We went via a route we haven't used before and we saw some interesting things along the way. Once we got to the beach all the students found a partner and had five minutes with a small container to collect something interesting to show and share. We sat together and talked about all the things that were found before everyone went off to play. Students found some remnants of previous fires on the beach and they had fun drawing with the charcoal. We took our writing books to the beach with us and everyone put good effort into their pictures. This trip we stayed well back from the wet zone but the next time we go there may be wet feet and mud involved! As we were leaving we spotted a blue heron fishing near the beach. We stopped at the park for a quick play on the way back to the school. It was such a beautiful day that we took our reading and centres time outside.
Tuesday we moved our centres time to the morning because the afternoon was taken up by our Jump Rope for Heart event. It was tons of fun and the grade 6 and 7 students did an awesome job of organizing and running the stations. We got to try our hockey and soccer skills, jump over and under some obstacles, bounce basketballs, jump rope, and get our face painted! It was a totally fun event and it was great to see everyone try their best at all the events.
Wednesday we welcomed a new friend - Paisley joined us from Khowhemun School. We showed her how we practice our printing on the whiteboards and we also taught her the important routines and rhythms of our day. It was picture day so we had to stick fairly close to the school for our turn. After we had our individual and class photos taken we met the rest of the school on the upper playground for our whole school photo. Centres time in the afternoon was both inside and out and many of the students chose to get dirty outside! We have been taking our trains and cars outside for centres in the last little while so we will have to bring out a car wash soon to get them all cleaned up!
Thursday morning we went for a walk to the alley with Ms. Mousseau's class. Miss Julie saw us leaving the school and opted to join us for our walk. The ramp building began again in earnest and many students experimented with their big jumps off the retaining wall. After a short play in the alley we headed for the treed area at the back of the school. A few of the boys were sure that they had found tarantula eggs on the rocks near the trees :) Several people elected to roll down the hill - something I've recently learned is important for vestibular development and ultimately for overall child development. Sorry about the grass they carried home - it was everywhere! After snack we read a book and then the students joined the school family groups for the first time. Up until now we've done the family group time as a large group of kindergarten students. This was an exciting step toward being ready for grade one! This month's theme was "everything is connected". The family group leaders read a book about how everything in our world is connected in some way. Each student brought a particular type of fruit (we brought strawberries) to the family group and together each family group made a friendship fruit salad. They all talked about how small parts come together to make something bigger and better. The kindergarten students will be part of the multi age family groups from now on - they were very excited to make some new connections with older students and other teachers!
Friday was Pro-D and the teachers enjoyed the opportunity to learn together at Bonner Elementary. I learned a bit about an Apple iPad app that is a great learning opportunity for students. I got to use an Apple Pencil with it that was very cool too!!
We are heading into a stretch of beautiful weather and I'm planning to get out for a walk every chance possible. Please make sure your child has a hat and appropriate footwear (no flip flops) for playing outside. Wednesday's walk day will be to Crofton Beach with Mr. Seymour. He will tell us some local stories and legends and he will also teach us the Hul'q'umi'num names for some of the things we can find at the beach.
