Weekly News June 14th
Monday morning we started with some printing practice using the Handwriting Heroes videos on YouTube. Melvin came for a visit and brought us his book about feeling jealous. Jealous is a difficult emotion for young children to understand but we brainstormed a lot and came to the conclusion that it feels a bit sad and a bit angry and like you want what someone else has. We went out for a walk with no particular destination in mind. Along York Avenue we noticed a pumper truck delivering cement to a house - possibly for a driveway. We thought about going closer to watch but the truck was blocking the sidewalk and was up on risers so we carried on instead. We turned down Joan and in the empty lot we found grass that was taller than all of us! We paused for a group photo on the benches before going for some exercise in the park by the museum. Once everyone had a turn on the equipment we took the boardwalk to the stairs and headed back to the school (with a short stop at the park for a play!) We had a nice centres time on Monday with lots of creativity.
Miss Williams was the guest teacher on Tuesday. She said that everything went quite well and the students helped her learn the routines. There was an earthquake drill and an assembly so there was lots to learn! Miss Williams got everyone started on their Jealous worksheets and was impressed with the efforts everyone made.
Wednesday morning we had to clear out of our room for the new kindergarten students to come and have Storytime with Mrs. Mitchell. We got a bit delayed in leaving but we still resolved to make it to the lake! After snack and doing some observations in our writing book we had only a short time to play before it was time to start the trek back to school. We did much better this time and made it back in time to enjoy most of the outside lunch recess. There are two more Wednesdays for us to gift our classroom to the new Kindergarten students so we still have a couple of long walk days in our future. Since September I've been answering "banana phones" as they appear in snacks and lunches. Although students will sometimes talk to whoever I tell them is on the "banana phone" most of them time they just roll their eyes and talk about how silly I am! On Wednesday, for the first time ever, one student answered the banana phone for another student! It was AWESOME!!! My silly has finally rubbed off!! There has been a lot more interest in communication lately, from practicing letters to making cards and signs, it has been lovely to be part of the literacy journey! Wednesday afternoon during centres a couple of students put together a math/rock gallery. They went to great lengths to set it up and get it ready for visitors. They had tickets and an aisle and then they realized they needed a sign to stop people from touching the exhibit. Eventually they were able to give guided tours of their creation. It was a definitely a proud teacher moment - especially because it was all done through PLAY!
Thursday we had an amazing day at Transfer Beach! Crabs were caught and fed, sandcastles were built and destroyed, the playground was thoroughly explored, the spray park was much enjoyed, and there was even a jellyfish in a bucket to examine! Everyone had a marvellous time and we were all exhausted by the end of the day!
Friday morning we did a quick calendar before heading out to catch the bus to Wendy's House. We thoroughly enjoyed the morning of play followed by our walk to Centennial Park. Thanks so much to the parents who joined us - those extra sets of eyes at the park are definitely welcome - and thanks also to those who brought and distributed the hot lunch. We had an amazing day for our last Kindergarten field trip! We will remember it fondly.
We still have a few outstanding library books - inventory has started and Miss Julie would like them in asap! Please have a quick look for any stray books!
There was a permission form sent home on Friday about our swimming dates - Monday June 24th and Wednesday June 26th. We will probably take our lunch up to the pool and have a picnic before we swim if the weather is good. Everyone will need to wear a lifejacket in the pool and they do not have enough available there so if your child has a life jacket please make sure it is labeled and sent with them on swimming days.
NEXT WEEK - June 17th - 21st

Tuesday - Parent appreciation morning starting at 8am. Please enjoy a coffee and a treat on us
we appreciate everything you do for your child's school experience
