Weekly News November 30th
Monday we started the day with math jobs. Everyone had the opportunity to choose a bin or basket of items to be sorted. They then had to explain and justify their sorting rule and draw and write about it in a little book. Once we'd had enough of sorting and a chance for a snack we bundled up, grabbed our umbrellas, and headed out for a walk in the rain. We went through two blocks of the alley heading north and found all kinds of puddle to jump in! The class is still making some awesome connections to the Stream of Dreams presentation we had at the beginning of the year. They found many drains - some of them overflowing with the heavy rainfall - and they continually remembered that "all drains lead to fish". Some of them were very concerned about the dirty, muddy, water that they saw going in one of the drains. It was a great thing that we got out for the walk as it was our first inside recess of the school year. Everyone really enjoyed the opportunity for the extra play time and the grade 7 buddies who came to help supervise were really fun to play with!
We started with Fine Arts on Tuesday morning, followed by story workshop. We set it up in Ms. Mousseau's room this week and it seemed that the story engagement was a little deeper this time. We added some paper on clipboards for those who wanted to make a record of their story. Ms. Mousseau's class invited us for a quick walk in the alley after snack - and we were happy to go with them! After lunch we went to the library where Miss Julie finished reading the book about community that she started last week. Everyone is doing a great job of bringing their library books each week - I really appreciate your support with helping your child remember their book!
Wednesday morning we dove back into sorting for our math jobs. Most students chose to use either the same manipulative or the same sorting rule so during carpet time we did some talking about all the different ways we can sort one thing. We were going to go for a walk but wound up spending some time on the upper playground instead as we don't get much time up there anymore. While we were there we rescued a worm (by moving it into the garden) and discovered some special rocks that had been painted and left by some kindness elves.
Thursday morning we started the day with a three-class walk to the woods. It was the first time we've all gone together and it was the perfect start to the day! For family time on Thursday morning we worked on our collaborative Christmas trees with loose parts. Everyone made an individual tree and they will all piece together to make a few big trees in the hallway. They are going to look amazing!
Friday there was no school for students - teachers were working on their connections to the new curriculum.
One of the awesome traditions at Crofton Elementary School is the Christmas Emporium - an opportunity for children to bring a few dollars and purchase (donated) gifts for family members. Parent volunteers help with the choosing and the wrapping of the gifts so the children are able to give some awesome surprises! Please consider helping by donating gently used (or new) items and / or coming to help with the organization and wrapping on Friday. Early next week your child will bring home an information page and planning form to help us know who they need to buy for and how much they have to spend. Please help me by sending the form and money back in a ziplock baggie.
We will continue to walk in all weather - please make sure your child has appropriate footwear and clothing.
NEXT WEEK - December!!! 3rd - 7th
Monday - Walk day
Tuesday - Library Day - please help your child remember their book
- Scholastic Book orders are due! (please let me know if there are any surprises!)
Wednesday - possible walk day
Thursday - walk day
Friday - hot lunch (burgers)
- Crofton Christmas Emporium (see note above)
- wacky hair day
