Weekly News September 14th
Wow! That week went quickly!
Welcome to Division 10 at Crofton Elementary School! We are a Kindergarten class with 15 students. There are 8 girls and 7 boys in our class. We are just beginning to learn about being at school and it will be a year of tremendous growth and preparation for the next phase of your child's education. We will play our way to learning all year long!
Monday and Tuesday we did half-day visits with both teachers together in my classroom. Students practiced the routines and the time went very quickly!
Wednesday was our first full day in our own class. It was really nice that we got to participate in the Stream of Dreams watershed education program but it was tough to do it on our first full day! We started the morning by hanging up coats and backpacks and sorting out inside vs. outside shoes. We did get some choices time where we could play with smaller centres but we had to clean them up a bit too soon for everyone's liking! The lady came in from the Stream of Dreams workshop and taught us about how every drain (in the street and in our house) leads to fish! We got a few minutes to play outside before heading down to the gym to paint our fish. We had a good long centres play time between both classes in the afternoon.
Thursday we did our best to remember the routines from Wednesday. We added a little work time where we read a book about how a dot can be a work of art and then we made some dots to stick on the sea-can that is our emergency supplies holder at the back of the school. We will get them stuck on it next week with some big buddies to help. We also stamped our BFF's (back and forth folders) for the first time. They went home with notices and forms to be filled out. The folders should be initialled and sent back to school every day please. This will be one of our primary means of communication. Our centres time on Thursday was fun and the routines are starting to work a bit better now.
Friday morning was the first time we had to hand in the BFF's. Some people forgot and had to be reminded after they had already gone to choices but it won't take long before students get used to it. Work time on Friday was about decorating our book boxes. We coloured them and put them together and then filled them up! They will be important as we learn about the Read to Self part of The Daily Five which will be our reading routine. We got some quality time with the puzzles after lunch and then had a fun centres time.
I hope everyone has a restful weekend - your children will be tired! Thank you for keeping sick kids at home - it makes a difference to how many times the germs get passed around the room!
