Weekly News September 28th
Monday was our first non-instructional day of the school year. These type of days (or 1/2 days) always involve some type of professional development. In this case, the school district was presenting to all teachers, education assistants and administrators about the district focus - Key Elements for Effective Learning Environments. They are very focused on the new BC Curriculum and where this generation of learners needs to go. It felt like a very productive day.
Tuesday started with Fine Arts with Ms. Wood. The students are getting much better at walking quietly in the hallway. Afterwards we had some time for learning choices where there were a few more explore options and a "faces" book to inspire some creative use of loose parts. At calendar time we talked about the Terry Fox Run coming up on Thursday. During snack we watched a video about Terry Fox. Our work time on Tuesday was the book of red. Students had to print their name (we will be starting to do this daily) and then trace some of the letters and colour the red things red. When the colour books are all done we will be putting them in our book boxes for a few weeks before they go home. In the afternoon we went to the library for the first time. Tuesday will be our regular library day - please help your child remember their book every week!
Wednesday there was a guest teacher as I had an appointment. Ms. Weston had a great time with the class and said things went quite smoothly overall.
The highlight of the day for many students on Thursday was the Terry Fox Run. We were very fortunate in the weather again this year and I was most impressed by the dedication of all the students. They were very well behaved during our first official assembly just before the run. Everyone kept running or walking the whole time and the granola bar treat at the end was very much appreciated!
Friday was Orange Shirt Day in recognition that All Children Matter. The topic of residential schools and the aftermath is a heavy one for this age group so I focused more on the story of how the little girl wasn't allowed to wear her favourite orange shirt. We talked about how we have favourite clothes and we are lucky because we can (usually) wear them whenever we want. Students coloured a shirt in a way that best represented their favourite shirt. Because it was so warm and beautiful we had an option of doing centres outside. Many students really enjoyed that extra outside time. After our end of the day dance party a former Crofton EA (educational assistant) popped in to bring us some sunflowers for doing some fine motor practice next week. She knows many of the siblings of this group and was excited to meet the next generation!
We still have about 5 students missing water bottles to live at school. If you haven't already sent one please do so soon! It really makes a difference throughout the day. The kind with a straw that pops up are very good because they don't spill as much when they are knocked over!
NEXT WEEK - October 1st - 5th!!!! (can you believe it's October?!?)
Monday - possible walk day? Please be prepared with appropriate outer wear
Tuesday -
Wednesday - possible walk day? Please be prepared with appropriate outer wear
Thursday - possible walk day? Please be prepared with appropriate outer wear
Friday - Photo Day - all students will have their photo taken no purchase is required
