Weekly News April 5th
Monday was a great start to the week! It was April 1st which is a day I like to invite students to share a joke with their friends. Thanks for supporting our joke day by helping your child practice a joke! There were several students who had clearly practiced their joke and were quite confident in sharing it! We walked up to the ball fields for snack and jokes because there is a good place to sit and be an audience there. Afterwards we had a nice long play on the playground there before coming back to school. Any time we can play at a playground with swings it's a good day! In the afternoon we read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown (she's the author of Goodnight Moon) and then we brainstormed ideas of what is important about spring to use for a class poem.
Tuesday morning after fine arts we went down to the lower playground and worked on stretching our limits on the hard parts. Everyone is getting more confident with trying things that are difficult. We had some tree climbers while we were out there - it's really special when we can do things that we're not allowed to do at lunch recess! We worked some more on writing the spring poem before lunch. After lunch we went to the library where Miss Julie read us a book about an animal none of us had ever heard of before. It's called a babirusa and it is kind of a cross between a deer and a pig! We weren't sure it was real until she showed us a video of it! We've been working on learning the sign language alphabet and the song has become part of our end of the day routine. You can ask your child to sing you the "A is for apple" song if you'd like to hear it! The rainbow sewing pictures that were done in fine arts are all up on the wall now if you'd like to check them out!
Wednesday morning the three youngest classes all went for walk in the woods with Mr. Seymour. This was our opportunity for learning about the Hul'q'umi'num' names and uses for things that grow in the woods. We heard about the many uses for all different trees and plants. We explored further and also more closely than we have in the past. Mr. Seymour was a valuable resource and was actively sought out to answer questions. We had our snack in the woods and then played for a while. In the afternoon one of the big kids came and hung out with us for centres. We got him to read "The Book With No Pictures" which was totally funny! It's one of our favourite things to do - surprising unsuspecting readers with it! Watch out if you come in to read...
Thursday morning we took some time to observe and draw the daffodils outside our doors. We used only green and yellow and black for our pictures and they are very striking! We put them up in the hallway to go with our spring poem. Please check them out when you can! After snack was family time when we did a trash mob with the whole school. Our "family" group (all the Kindergarten students) walked through the alley and then all over the school grounds and picked up and then sorted the garbage we found. It was pretty amazing how much garbage the whole school collected!
Friday morning after fine arts we had centres because we weren't going to have enough time in the afternoon with the early dismissal. One of the choices during centres was to start a 3 step process for another spring picture to further illustrate our poem in the hallway. We used the water colours to paint the backgrounds and then we practiced using straws to blow ink on paper. Our goal is to "blow" the trunk of a tree and it's branches, which we will then decorate with blossoms. It's fun to see how fort-building has begun in earnest! The supplies have been there all year long but it's only this week that forts have been a focus during centres time. After lunch and BFF's we did a quick math activity and then had books and puzzles at the carpet.
