Weekly News October 19th
Monday I was not feeling 100% so Mrs. Ashworth was the guest teacher. She said it was a good day all around and everyone was able to get their “Book of Green” completed. We’ve now finished four colour books and they will live in our book boxes for the near future and eventually be sent home.
Tuesday morning we started with Fine Arts with Ms. Wood. For work time we finished up our thankful picture and frame based on The Thankful Book by Todd Parr. They have now been matted and hung in the hallway - please come in and take a look! In the afternoon we went to the library where Miss Julie greeted us with one of her favourite books - The Paperbag Princess. She dressed up like the character from the story and told us all about the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) event on Monday. It was so lovely out that Ms. Mousseau did an outside station for afternoon centres. Students were able to choose our room, Ms. Mel’s room or outside to play.
Just an added note: when I came back on Tuesday from being away there was a pack of Kleenex that was brought in while I was away - I’m not sure who sent it but I thank you! It should keep us wiped up at least until the spring allergies set it!
Wednesday morning we had a quick choices and then bus safety with bus driver Joan. She told us all about how to be safe on the bus and around the bus. The tires are bigger than several of us and we know they could squish us very easily. She also showed us the engine and the special lights that tell the cars to stop. We learned that the driver can’t see people outside if they are too close to the bus. She took us on a short ride around the block and we practiced keeping our bottom on the bottom and our back to the back. She stopped quickly a couple of times to show us how it feels if she has to stop suddenly. After snack Mr. Seymour came and talked to us about the October theme of being grateful for what you have. We showed him our thankful pictures and sang the songs with him. On Wednesday I took the outside shift and Ms. Mousseau and Ms. Mel had their rooms open. We really enjoyed bringing some of the toys outside and exploring with them in different ways. We cleaned up so quickly at the end that we were able to do a GoNoodle activity - we started with my favourite one “Peanut Butter In A Cup”. It’s a fun activity to do at the carpet that gets our body moving!
Thursday morning we left almost immediately for a walk in the woods. This was our second time exploring in the woods and there was a lot more risk taking - we even had a couple of tree climbers! We found lots of garbage and metal recycling and the students told me we should bring a bag next time so we can clean up our woods. After we got back we had a quick snack before the Great BC Shakeout. It was our first earthquake drill and I tried to keep it as low-key as possible. The things we need to remember are to duck under something (a table, desk, or chair) and cover our head. Then we have to count until the shaking stops and then for another 60 seconds before we gather all of our things and slowly and carefully get out and go to our meeting place. Everyone did very well with our practice and Mrs. Calverley was impressed with us all! Our work time was spent writing and drawing our invitations for Monday’s DEAR event. Any student who doesn’t have an adult with them on Monday morning will be paired with a big buddy to read. There will be other family reading events this year so if you cannot make this one there will be other opportunities.
Friday was a professional development day. I was in Nanaimo making a presentation on Tinker Tales, a design thinking and oral language support initiative that I participated in last year. I will be trying to do it again this year - it's lots of fun!
Please look for an invitation to your child’s e-portfolio in your email this weekend. I’m attempting to get them up and running as soon as possible.
