Weekly News March 1st
Monday morning was beautiful and crisp outside so we went for a play on lower playground. The time we are spending by ourselves there has been very helpful in building our core muscles and our confidence in trying things that are difficult. At the end of the day we had a few extra minutes so we did the Pinocchio dance.
Tuesday during fine arts with Ms. Wood students worked on making some Pink Shirt decorations centred on the anti-bullying message "stand up - speak out". Afterwards we re-read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and used the tinker trays to design and build a solution for getting the goats across the river without using the Troll's bridge. Melvin came for a visit and we talked about another big emotion - sadness. Thanks to all of you for doing the follow up activities at home. This program has been shown to be beneficial for students and your support is appreciated! Miss Julie read us a story about friendship in library and we enjoyed picking out new books. We are playing word games for phonemic awareness every day now and I'm hopeful there will be some progress in the next assessment period.
We didn't get our walk in on Wednesday because Naomi was back to teach us more about playing Lacrosse. There was marked development in everyone's coordination and skills with the ball! Very cool to see! We had an assembly to talk about Pink Shirt Day and what it means. Mrs. Calverley gave some great examples of ways to put a stop to bullying. We can stand up for our friends and tell someone if we see bullying happening. She also helped us understand the difference between someone being rude, someone being mean, and someone bullying. We played a new math game with some dice where we had to add up the dots on two dice and cover the square with that number on it. Playing games with dice is a good way to support math skills!
On Thursday there was a guest teacher because I was on Pro-D for the day. By all accounts it was a good day!
Friday morning everyone was very excited because of the afternoon field trip to Wendy's House. We started with Fine Arts in the library with Ms. Wood. We had a casualty as we were getting ready to go down when one of the boys slipped and banged himself on a table. He had to go get some stitches and the class was quite worried about him. Everyone was relieved later to hear that he was okay and we're looking forward to seeing him on Monday. After Fine Arts we went down for some time on the lower playground. While we were there we noticed an excavator working on the side of the field. We investigated and found that they were smoothing out the path near where there has been an air quality monitoring station installed. Ben cut play on lower playground / excavator working on Air monitoring station. We continue to look at rocks everywhere we go and some students are beginning to be able to identify which characteristics help us classify the rocks as igneous (from lava), sedimentary (layers of sediment - usually in water) and metamorphic (changed by head and pressure). These are big words but the descriptions help us to remember them. We will be trying to wrap up the rock study by the end of next week. The afternoon at Wendy's House was awesome! We had a great time and on the bus home students were already talking about their plans for the next time we can go - in June!
We will continue to walk in all weather - please make sure your child has appropriate footwear and clothing.
