Weekly News May 17th
Monday morning we started by saying hello to our ducks in their pool and then we set out for a walk to the park. We took a long route around the block and got to see the final stages of the sidewalk fix. I brought a couple of 1 metre square white sheets to act as a canvas for some transient art at the park. A few people took me up on the invitation to create and we ended up with a few photos of the process. We had a few minutes inside before lunch recess so we played a rhythm / hand clapping game which was a good coordination practice! In the afternoon we had the option of doing centres inside or outside.
We were all pretty sad on Tuesday morning to find that two of our ducklings had died overnight. Ms. Mousseau and I decided that the time had come to send the remaining animals back to their farms. Everyone got a chance to say goodbye to the ducks over the course of the day and they were picked up right at the end of centres. In the morning, right after Fine Arts, we brainstormed all the things we had learned about oviparous animals. Our work time was spent recording our learning in our Oviparous Animals book. In library Miss Julie read us a story about a monkey whose mother was protecting him from the larger animals around him. During centres time there was a group of serious players who decided that the house centre needed re-arranging so there was large-scale furniture moving going on! We said our final goodbyes to the ducks and very soon afterwards we got a photo of them in their new home!
Wednesday was early dismissal so it was a short day. We came in and snacked right away before walking up to the community centre for the dress rehearsal of Cinderella and the Substitute Fairy Godmother. It was super funny and we really enjoyed it! It was an early dismissal day so right after lunch recess we ate our lunch quickly and then said our goodbyes.
Thursday morning the chicks were picked up by their owners and we got everything all cleaned up and cleared out. It was a great experience to watch the chicks and ducks come from the eggs and grow and change in the short time we had them! Right after calendar on Thursday morning we headed out for a walk and snack in the woods. We noticed that there was a lot more lush, green growth around and many people were able to connect it to the recent rains. We saw new green growth on trees, ferns, bushes, and grass. We noticed that the new growth was softer and brighter. There was fort building, rope swinging, sword play and tag games. Several slugs were found and lots of slime was examined - this may be our new area of investigation! We did some research when we got back and found that slugs are mollusks! We walked back through the alley and I was gifted with a lovely assortment of flowers that formed a wonderful bouquet. There was a whole school assembly just before lunch. Mrs. Calverley reminded us of all that we had learned and practiced over the year - like using our WITS (walk away, ignore, talk it out, and seek help). We saw some big kids getting recognition for their team sports and clubs.
Friday morning after fine arts we took our snacks out back for a picnic under the trees. There was lots of swinging on branches and imaginative play. We found a rock that got broken but we couldn't guess how! Just before we went inside we had some extra time on the playground and a few people climbed to the top of the tree! When we got inside we had some rest time on the carpet while I read another chapter of The Enchanted Wood. Jo, Bessie and Fanny have now had adventures in Roundabout Land, and with The Three Bears and the Magic Snowman in the Land of Ice and Snow. You could ask your child about how they rescued Jo! In the afternoon Mrs. Elliot was the guest teacher while I was at a meeting at the board office.
I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend! See you all on Tuesday!
